Coffee Underground
Coffee Underground is fun little coffee shop cafe in Greenville, SC.
Believe it or not, it’s right off Coffee St. in the heart of Downtown.
It’s also underground.
So Downtown Greenville is super cute, with an old timey feel made modern.
Cue fairy style lights illuminating Main Street.
Coffee Underground has both indoor & outdoor seating.
The outdoor patio is absolutely enchanting. The night I went it was about to storm & pretty chilly - so I chose to sit inside that evening. However; the patio is definitely a go to spot in the Spring.
The interior of the cafe has a cozy and mysterious sort of vibe to it - see the host stand right as you walk in and they’ll seat you.
So I’m not really sure what year the building that houses the cafe was built, but it *seems* really old with its exposed brick walls and wood support posts. It’s (presumably) haunted.
That being said; I’m also convinced that my kitchen, bathroom, car, office, and general neighborhood is haunted - also.
The menu at Coffee Underground is broad with desserts, apps, soup, salads, sandwiches and so much more. Yay for variety. So *my* fave part of the menu is the vegetarian section.
For my meal I had a ‘Black Bean Burger’ with a side of Sweet Potato Fries & a Lemonade to drink.
The Sweet Potato Fries were crunchy and nomz & the Black Bean Burger was delish & filling, delivered on a *very tasty* fluffy - yet doughy, brioche style bun. The lettuce & tomato that topped the bean burger were fresh and plentiful.
To make the Black Bean Burger - vegan, skip the cheddar & sneak in your own vegan chipotle Mayo. I like to bring my own jar around town - which is why I’m always carrying around a large satchel. It’s hard to explain at airport security, but totally worth it.
Admittedly - Coffee Underground and I have a history & it has been one of my fave spots in GVL for the past couple years. My ex brought me there right when we started dating & I’ve been going there ever since we met.
I hadn’t been since we broke up - but I *did* just get my second covid 19 vaccine, so now that my DNA has mutated - I assumed that if I happened to run into him; I could simply shapeshift into another veggie burger & he wouldn’t even know it was me.
Sooooo - Apparently Coffee Underground has live theater!!
The Wednesday night I went - they didn’t have anything thing on the books... I was going to volunteer to do my one woman pantomime of me making canned soup in my haunted kitchen; but kinda wanted to make it an early night - so didn’t offer.
The cafe definitely has a creative aura. The couple next to me was writing a play while I was making notes and stealing all of their ideas.
Several other patrons were typing on laptops or (I would imagine) writing their very own one person pantomime theater productions.
Although I went to Coffee Underground for dinner on my last visit - lunch and breakfast are also delightful. Plus, Coffee Underground is the perfect spot to grab a coffee to go while you’re sightseeing or shopping in Downtown GVL. Their coffee is definitely gourmet, strong and (bonus!) they offer oat milk as an alternative to dairy creamer.
Fun tip; Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the bronze mouse on the way out!
